A compact, clump-forming, deciduous, perennial grass bearing upright to arching, narrowly linear, yellow-banded, dark green leaves and, in late summer and early autumn, upright stems bearing feathery panicles of reddish-purple flower spikelets turning silvery-tan by winter.
