Achillea ptarmica 'Ballerina' Seeds

If you love the airy look of Gypsophila but want something that returns year after year with zero fuss, meet 'Ballerina'. This improved variety of our native Sneezewort produces masses of fully double, pure white flowers that look like tiny, ruffled tutus or popcorn buttons.

Unlike older varieties which can get leggy, 'Ballerina' is bred to be more compact and self-supporting. It forms a low mound of dark green foliage that becomes completely smothered in white clouds from early summer to autumn. It is incredibly hardy, thrives in damp soils where other plants rot, and makes a superb long-lasting cut flower.

🌿 Understanding the Plant

Achillea ptarmica is a Hardy Perennial.

This is a "rhizomatous" plant, meaning it grows from underground stems. It forms a dense clump that slowly spreads outwards, creating excellent ground cover that suppresses weeds. Unlike the common yellow or red Yarrows (*Achillea millefolium*) which need dry soil, *ptarmica* is happy in moist, heavier soils.

The "Double" Bloom: The flowers are sterile, meaning they don't produce pollen. This allows the plant to hold onto its petals for weeks without fading, keeping the display looking fresh for longer.

🌱 Growing Guide: How to Sow and Grow

This is an easy-to-grow perennial that often blooms in its first year if sown early.

Germination:
Sow indoors from February to April. Surface sow onto moist compost and do not cover (the seeds need light to germinate). Keep at approx 18-20Β°C. Germination takes 10-14 days.

Where to Sow:
Plant out after the last frost. It prefers full sun or partial shade. It is one of the few silver/grey-leaved plants that actually tolerates damp (but not waterlogged) soil.

Care While Growing:
Cut Back: After the first main flush of flowers in July, shear the whole plant back by half. This tidies up the foliage and encourages a second flush of blooms in September.

🀝 Perfect Garden Companions

'Ballerina' provides the bright white highlights that make other colours pop:

  • πŸ’œ Verbena bonariensis: The Airy Partner. The tall, purple stems of Verbena float high above the low, white mounds of the Achillea. A classic, airy combination.
  • πŸ’— Lychnis coronaria (Rose Campion): The Magenta Shock. The shocking magenta-pink of Lychnis against the pure white of 'Ballerina' creates a vibrant, high-energy cottage garden look.
