Gaura 'Pink Bouquet' Seeds

If 'The Bride' is the elegant white wedding dress, 'Pink Bouquet' is the blushing bridesmaid. This stunning variety possesses all the movement and charm of the classic Gaura but adds a splash of warmth. The buds form as deep raspberry-red "wands" before opening into clouds of soft, starry pink flowers that look exactly like a swarm of butterflies hovering over the foliage.

This plant never sits still. Standing on slender, arching stems, it dances in the slightest breeze, creating a moving haze of colour that softens the look of rigid plants nearby. It is an endurance athlete, flowering tirelessly from early summer right through until the first frosts, and is incredibly drought tolerant once established.

๐ŸŒฟ Understanding the Plant

Gaura (now botanically Oenothera lindheimeri) is a **Hardy Perennial** (often treated as short-lived).

The Taproot Factor: It grows a deep taproot which makes it brilliant for dry, sandy soils, but it hates sitting in cold, wet clay in winter. In heavy soil, treat it as a glamorous annual or add plenty of grit.

Top Tip: This is a "First Year Flowering Perennial." If you sow it early in spring (Jan-March), it will bloom beautifully in its first summer, just like an annual!

๐ŸŒฑ Growing Guide: How to Sow and Grow

Gaura is satisfying to grow but needs warmth to germinate.

Germination:
Sow indoors from February to April. Surface sow onto moist compost and cover with a very fine sprinkling of vermiculite (they need light to germinate). Keep warm (approx 20ยฐC). Germination takes 14-21 days.

Where to Sow:
They demand full sun. They thrive in light, well-drained soil. They are the perfect candidate for gravel gardens, sunny banks, or large terracotta pots.

Care While Growing:
They are very low maintenance. You don't need to deadhead individual flowers (they drop off cleanly). If the plant gets too floppy in mid-summer, you can give it a "Chelsea Chop" by cutting it back by a third to encourage bushier new growth.

๐Ÿค Perfect Garden Companions

The soft pink of 'Pink Bouquet' is a versatile blender. Try these pairings:

  • ๐Ÿ”ต Cornflower 'Blue Ball': The Cottage Contrast. The electric blue of the Cornflower makes the soft pink of the Gaura look even sweeter. The spiky cornflower stems contrast nicely with the arching Gaura wands.
  • ๐ŸŒพ Stipa tenuissima (Pony Tails): The Prairie Look. Gaura and Grasses are a match made in heaven. They both move in the wind, creating a relaxed, tactile planting scheme that looks incredible backlit by the sun.
